  • Botanical Name: Microsorum musifolium
  • Common Name(s): Crocodile Fern
  • Description: Crocodile ferns (Microsorum musifolium) have leaves with a lot of personality and can be a favorite among fern lovers. The leaves of the ferns resemble the distinctive leathery appearance of crocodile skin which is how the plant got its name. Typically found in Southeast Asia and parts of Australia, this fern is a little picky about its environment and thrives in humid, tropical environments. Although they are very slow growers, they make great statement pieces since they can grow up to 5 feet.

To care for your Fern 'Crocodile', you can follow these care tips:

1. Light: Place your Fern 'Crocodile' in a location with bright, indirect light. It thrives in medium to low light conditions, so avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the delicate fronds.

2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water your Fern 'Crocodile' when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry. Make sure to water it evenly and avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.

3. Humidity: Ferns love humidity! Increase humidity around your Fern 'Crocodile' by misting its fronds regularly or placing a tray with water nearby. You can also consider using a humidifier to create a more humid environment.

4. Temperature: Ferns prefer temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). Avoid exposing your Fern 'Crocodile' to extreme temperature fluctuations or drafts.

5. Fertilizer: Feed your Fern 'Crocodile' with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every two to four weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Follow the instructions on the fertilizer package for the correct dosage.

6. Pruning: Remove any yellow or brown fronds to maintain the plant's appearance. Trimming back any leggy or overgrown fronds can also help stimulate new growth.

Remember, each plant has its own unique needs, so observe your Fern 'Crocodile' closely and adjust its care as needed. Enjoy nurturing your lovely fern! 🌿
