  • Botanical Name: Asplenium dimorphum x difforme
  • Common Name(s): Austral Gem Fern
  • Description: This relatively new Australian fern grows uniquely shaped leaves with a waxy coating that prevents water loss and shedding. This durability and adaptability make it an ideal indoor plant (and gift) for any collection in any climate. It is a medium-sized plant that grows flat and works well for hanging pots or pedestals.

This fern is also known as the Kangaroo Paw Fern. Here are some tips to keep it happy and healthy:

1. Lighting: Austral Gem Ferns prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate lower light conditions, but avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch their delicate fronds. Place your fern in a spot with filtered or indirect light, such as near a north or east-facing window.

2. Watering: Keep the soil of your Austral Gem Fern consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water it when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry to the touch. Be careful not to let it dry out completely or sit in water, as both can harm the plant. Aim for a balance of moisture and good drainage.

3. Humidity: Kangaroo Paw Ferns thrive in high humidity. To increase humidity, you can mist the fronds regularly or place a tray of water near the plant. Another option is to group your fern with other plants, as they create a microclimate of higher humidity.

4. Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains moisture but doesn't become waterlogged. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and regular potting soil works well for Austral Gem Ferns. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating.

5. Temperature: These ferns prefer temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). Avoid exposing them to cold drafts or temperatures below 55°F (13°C). They can tolerate slightly warmer temperatures, but avoid placing them near heat sources or in direct airflow from air conditioning.

6. Fertilizing: Feed your Austral Gem Fern with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging for the correct dosage.

7. Pruning: If your fern develops any brown or yellow fronds, you can trim them back to maintain its appearance. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to avoid damaging the healthy foliage.

Remember to regularly check your Austral Gem Fern for signs of pests or diseases, such as spider mites or fungal issues. If you notice any problems, address them promptly with appropriate treatments.

I hope these tips help you care for your Austral Gem Fern! Enjoy its lush, green foliage and the unique beauty it brings to your space! 🌿💚
