  • Botanical Name: Pachypodium 'lamerei'
  • Common Names: Madagascar Palm
  • Description: This striking houseplant hails from Madagascar and because it has leaves growing around the crown this combination gives rise to the common name of Madagascar Palm. Pachypodium means "thick foot" and refers to the thick swollen stem that stores water and gives the plant structure and strength.
The swollen stem grows upwards with the leaves surrounding the crown gradually falling and then growing new ones as it ages. All parts of Pachypodium contain a latex sap which is poisonous. However, even if you do have pets this may not be a total deal breaker because the plant protects itself by way of tough hooked spines that will deter even the most curious cat.

Oh, the Pachypodium 'lamerei' or Madagascar Palm is such a unique and fascinating plant! Here are some care tips to help you keep your Madagascar Palm happy and thriving:

1. Light: Madagascar Palms love bright, direct sunlight. Place your plant near a south or west-facing window where it can receive at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. If you don't have a sunny spot indoors, you can also consider placing it outdoors in a sunny location during the warmer months.

2. Watering: Madagascar Palms are drought-tolerant plants, so it's important not to overwater them. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and then give it a thorough watering. During the winter months, reduce watering frequency as the plant goes into a dormant period.

3. Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix for your Madagascar Palm. A mix of cactus potting soil or succulent mix with some perlite or sand works well. This will help prevent waterlogged soil and root rot.

4. Temperature: Madagascar Palms prefer warm temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). They can tolerate some temperature fluctuations, but try to avoid extreme cold or hot conditions.

5. Humidity: Madagascar Palms can tolerate average indoor humidity levels. However, if the air in your home is very dry, you can increase humidity by misting the leaves occasionally or placing a tray of water near the plant.

6. Fertilizing: Fertilize your Madagascar Palm during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer package for the correct application frequency.

7. Pruning: You can prune your Madagascar Palm to maintain its shape or remove any dead or damaged leaves. Use clean, sharp pruning shears and make clean cuts.

8. Potting: Repot your Madagascar Palm every 2-3 years, or when you notice it has outgrown its current pot. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one and has drainage holes.

Remember, the Madagascar Palm is a slow-growing plant, so be patient with its growth. With the right care, it can become a stunning and unique addition to your indoor or outdoor space. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
