  • Botanical Name: Philodendron 'tortum'
  • Common Names: Tortum
  • Description: The Philodendron Tortum is relatively new to the plant world! This thin, spindly plant can be found on the forest floors of Brazil, so they love dappled, indirect light, high humidity, and well-draining soil. Water when the first 3-4" of soil is dry. Add water slowly and thoroughly enough to see liquid draining from the bottom of the pot.

Taking care of a Philodendron 'Tortum' is pretty similar to caring for other Philodendron varieties. Here are some care tips for your plant:

1. Light: Philodendron 'Tortum' prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. Find a spot in your home where it can receive bright, filtered light.

2. Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist but avoid overwatering. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. It's better to underwater than overwater, as Philodendrons are more tolerant of dry conditions than soggy soil.

3. Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. A mixture of peat moss, perlite, and regular potting soil works well for Philodendron 'Tortum'. Ensure that the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

4. Temperature and Humidity: Philodendron 'Tortum' prefers temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). It can tolerate average household humidity, but higher humidity levels will promote better growth. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves or placing a tray of water near the plant.

5. Fertilizing: Feed your Philodendron 'Tortum' with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength to avoid over-fertilization.

6. Pruning: If your Philodendron 'Tortum' becomes leggy or develops any yellow or damaged leaves, you can trim them back to maintain its appearance. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to avoid introducing any infections.

7. Toxicity: Keep in mind that Philodendron plants, including 'Tortum', are toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep them out of reach of curious pets and children.

Keep an eye out for common pests like spider mites or mealybugs. If you notice any signs of infestation, treat the plant with an appropriate insecticide or try using natural pest control methods.

I hope these care tips help you keep your Philodendron 'Tortum' happy and healthy! Let me know if you have any more questions. 🌿😊
