  • Botanical Name: Platycerium bifurcatum
  • Common Name(s): Staghorn fern, Elkhorn fern
  • Description: Native to Java and southeastern Australia, the Birds Nest 'Staghorn' fern has a fuzzy texture to the leaves that can get very large if taken care of. The name bifurcatum means forked, referring to the leaves that split and resemble stag or elk horns. It can grow up to 31-35 in tall and wide, and care is easy as long as they're provided with low to medium light and moderate moisture like most ferns.

To care for your Fern 'Staghorn,' you can follow these care tips:

1. Mounting: Staghorn Ferns are epiphytic, meaning they naturally grow on other plants. Mount your Fern on a board or hang it in a basket using sphagnum moss or a specialized mounting plaque.

2. Light: Staghorn Ferns thrive in bright, indirect light. Place your Fern in a location with filtered sunlight or near a north-facing window.

3. Watering: Water your Staghorn Fern by soaking the root ball or mounting medium thoroughly, then allowing it to dry out slightly between waterings. Mist the fronds occasionally to increase humidity.

4. Humidity: Staghorn Ferns love high humidity. You can increase humidity by misting the fronds regularly or placing a tray of water nearby. Avoid misting the shield fronds (the brown, flat structure at the base) to prevent rot.

5. Temperature: Staghorn Ferns prefer temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C). Protect them from extreme temperature fluctuations and cold drafts.

6. Fertilizer: Feed your Staghorn Fern with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every two to four weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Apply the fertilizer to the root ball or mounting medium.

7. Mount Maintenance: Over time, your Staghorn Fern may produce new fronds at the base while the older fronds turn brown. You can remove the brown fronds carefully to maintain its appearance.

Remember to keep an eye out for pests like mealybugs or scale insects. If you notice any signs of infestation, treat the plant with an appropriate insecticidal soap or consult a local plant expert for advice. Enjoy caring for your Staghorn Fern! 🌿
